Cripes, those SyFy movies are dangerous

It seems most Stargate actors are off doing wretched SyFy movies in out-of-the-way (aka cheap) locations, and now one of them was badly injured in the process.

Corin Nemec was in a boat crash in Belize, and broke his femur in three places (!)and lost a lot of blood. Luckily, he survived. Others, including the lead actor, were injured. No mention of names. Full details at http://7newsbelize.com/sstory.php?nid=24537.

Gads, think it's time to bring all these flicks back to filming in the States/Canada where there are stricter laws and regulations...

Hope Corin recovers; a break that bad could leave a permanent injury.

I thought by your tag that you were covering SciFi (Imagine Greater)
channel 'films' AND I use the term loosely
I still laugh when I think of your commentary for Ferocious Planet
Jan. 25th, 2013 02:34 am (UTC)
Yeah, SyFy doesn't really air science fiction, not the true stuff.

Ah, yes, Ferocious Planet was fun to pick apart. If Joe ever does another one... heh heh.

I bookmarked it because it is a classic .........

How horrifying!

He's darned lucky. Hope the rest are okay too. I can't even find a cast listing for the movie yet.

Oh, ouch, poor Corin :S
Jan. 25th, 2013 12:40 pm (UTC)
I'll say. A break like that has to have long-lasting issues...

Yeah, I remember an actor that was in the show Hercules who was killed while filming a movie overseas. They just don't take safety like they do here and in Canada. They get away with a lot (saving money) filming in places that don't have strict rules.
Jan. 25th, 2013 12:48 pm (UTC)
Had not heard about the Hercules actor. I remember Powers Boothe nearly drowned filming the Emerald Forest in Brazil. Eric Fleming (Rawhide) drowned filming a movie in Peru. Still shudder at what happened to Vic Morrow on Twilight Zone set... and these are just the actors. Crew and stunt people, even models, have met nasty ends on location filming. Eegads, I read too many newspapers...

It was Kevin Smith - the guy who played Ares. This happened 10 years ago right after he finished filming a movie in Beijing. I remember it, because he was due to start filming a movie with Bruce Willis in Hawaii right afterwards.
Jan. 26th, 2013 02:28 pm (UTC)
OMG,now I remember. Definite tragedy :(
Jan. 25th, 2013 05:40 pm (UTC)
Vic Morrow's death still haunts me.

Yes, Kevin Smith. Wasn't sure if I remembered the right name so I didn't write it down.
Jan. 26th, 2013 02:28 pm (UTC)
Had to google Kevin Smith, but remember his death now. Sad.
Jan. 26th, 2013 04:17 pm (UTC)
Very, he was young and had a family I believe.

not only that, there's nothing like OSHA (occupational safety and health administration) to go investigate what happened to try to make sure it doesn't happen again. if i recall, the police there (hong kong?) blamed him for the accident. said he was reckless or drunk or something.

Wouldn't want to be blamed for a popular actors death after all. I doubt he was a reckless person after all he survived years until he went to film there!

The way I'm reading it, Corin is the lead actor as well as a producer.

There are two movies from the same company, Titan Global Entertainment, mentioned here, Jurassic Attack and Poseidon Rex.

The former shows Belize as a filming location, but it's in post-production. The latter I can't find much more than a monster movie poster image. I'm thinking maybe they filmed both with the same crew and locations, maybe some of the same actors as well, all to save more money.

That had to be a horrifying experience for Corin, and I have a feeling he's going to have a lot of healing time followed by PT to get his leg back into shape. Hope he can get back home soon to rest and recover.

Ah, I see where I made the error. https://www.facebook.com/StevenHelmkampPage - FB page for another 'lead' actor on the movie. Has photo with Corin in it.

It would not surprise me if two movies were made by teh same production company at the same time to save money. Alas, this will be penny-wise pound-foolish if any lawsuits arise. Although not sure how that occurs in a foreign country.

Corin's got a long stretch ahead of him to heal that leg, and hopefully there's no problem with all the blood transfusions. When you lose too much blood, sometimes you develop clotting issues (as in no clotting). Don't know how soon it will be when he can head to the States as sometimes with some breaks, you can't fly due to pressure differences and shifting bones.

are there anymore movies filmed in America? I don't think so. Tough job now being an actor...
Jan. 25th, 2013 12:49 pm (UTC)
Bulgaria, Romania, AFrica.... yeah, America not so much :( I remember a guy I knew went to a film crew in South Africa. They were instructed what to do so as not to get murdered. Yikes!!!

:) I hope you're not against Romania, my native country. It's a great place, but still you're right, when I broke my ankle in the US while working on cruise ships, there was no way in hell they could get me out of there without getting fixed. You still have great laws protecting the people. To tell you frankly, now is my favourite place to be, though crisis came everywhere
Jan. 26th, 2013 02:25 pm (UTC)
Oh no,not against Romania. :) It has lovely forests (Michael Shanks made a movie there, as I recall). It's just that production companies need to ensure safety for their cast/crew. European countries seem pretty safe, but Africa and South America and islands? Not so much. However, I do recall a US tourist breaking a limb in England, I think, and got treated without paying a dime. DOn't be a foreign tourist in the US, though. Our medicine costs, alas!

You're not thinking of the Beatles fans who walked on his hands across the zebra crossing outside Abbey Road studios are you? His story was in the Michael Moore movie Sicko...
Jan. 29th, 2013 03:03 am (UTC)
Never heard about that. No, I read about this other tourist several years back in some article on health care.
Jan. 29th, 2013 01:05 pm (UTC)
It's probably pretty much the same deal. Emergency medicine is free to all - citizens, permanent residents and tourists alike. USians always seem to be stunned by only having to pay for their pain meds...
Jan. 30th, 2013 12:40 pm (UTC)
Luckily never got injured while in UK, but yeah, would definitey have been shocked if I'd had free medical care.
Jan. 27th, 2013 04:36 am (UTC)
Yikes! He's damned lucky to be alive, given some of the large blood vessels that can be damaged in such a break; given the bleeding, it sounds like he knicked something pretty major.

Glad to hear that he got through it and the surgery. He's got some pretty hardcore PT to get through to complete his recovery.
Jan. 29th, 2013 03:03 am (UTC)
Most major vessel is femoral artery and that's a BAD one to nick. Yeah, he's got a long road ahead of him with PT. Year, minimum, I'm sure.
Jan. 29th, 2013 01:03 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah. It's doubtful he'd be here if he'd done anything major to that one.

A kid at my high school - all those years ago - was hit by a car and broke his femur. Even after a year of PT, he had a slight limp that he did not have prior to the accident.

Wow. Cheap and quick, that's what Syfy wants from its movies.Hope he's okay.
Jan. 30th, 2013 12:38 pm (UTC)
Alas, the movies are so cheap (production and definitely scripts)...
Jan. 31st, 2013 11:01 pm (UTC)
Yikes! I've seen it on other places now too, but your post was the first I heard of this at the day you posted it. How awful.

John Barrowman also once almost was killed while filming the movie "Shark Attack III" (he was young and needed the money) in Bulgaria. He was supposed to dive into and out of the submarine, which was full of water, but after he had gotten in and closed the entrance the other hatch did not open. He could not go back where he had come from either, so he was stuck. He had only 2 minutes of air left in his bottle. Thankfully they realized he was not coming out and went down to get him. That really could have ended badly and we would have had no Torchwood at all :(

And do you know the story about Benedict Cumberbatch being kidnapped and almost killed in South Africa? We wouldn't have a Sherlock either, then... you can read it in his own words here:

Who would have thought acting could be so dangerous?
